It’s the summer. Time to soak up some rays and head to the pool. So, if you’re like most people, the very last thing on your mind is your plumbing. We get it. But also – this is the perfect time to get a head start on some much-needed plumbing TLC. For example, when was the last time your washing machine hoses crossed your mind? Have your toilet seat cushions been keeping you up at night? We didn’t think so.
Here’s a list of potential projects to get your plumbing ahead of the curve:
Washing Machine Hoses
What stays out of sight will sometimes never come to mind. But these little guys can do a heck of a lot of damage if they ever burst. In fact, it’s a good idea to replace your washing machine hoses every 3 to 5 years. And when you do, our recommendation is to get braided stainless-steel hoses. They are more sturdy and reliable than rubber, and worth the extra peace of mind.
Sprinkler Systems
Sprinklers can be a headache when it comes to wasting water. A little leak can go a long way, so to speak. Not only will it send your water bill to new heights, but it can also do a number on your grass.
Make sure to take a look at each of your sprinkler heads. Look for breaks, leaks or just wear and tear. The great thing about sprinkler heads is that they are replaceable. You can take the damaged head off and bring it to the store with you.
Disposal Maintenance
In the summer months, many of your appliances will see an increase in usage. No school means more home time. Which means more food being cooked and eaten. More barbecues. And a lot more garbage being dumped down the disposal. Let’s make sure your disposal is in good shape. For starters, sharpen your disposal blades with some ice. Just toss a few cubes into the drain and turn on your disposal. You can actually add a little rock salt to help clean the drain, as well. Avoid pouring grease down the disposal to avoid damaging your blades. And never put bones in your disposal. It’s a perfect recipe for needing a new disposal.
Check For Leaks
You know the best time to check for a leak? When it’s not currently flooding your house. So during the warm months it’s a good idea to start looking for leaks while you still have a chance to fix them before winter.
Grab a flashlight and take some time to inspect each of the elements that use water both inside and outside of your house.
For example, check faucets, pipes under the sink, shower heads, bathtub spigots, drinking water line, water softener, hot water heater, outdoor spigots, sprinklers, pool and more to see if they are in good working order.
Other Tips
Replace the cushions on the bottom of your toilet seat to keep it from slamming into the porcelain.
Use hot, soapy water to remove buildup on shower heads, bathroom spigots and spray nozzles.
Take a walk around your home and check for odors around your plumbing that are out of the ordinary. A correctly operating plumbing system runs without odor, so any unpleasant smells indicate a problem.
